I have been trying to figure out how to install a motorized hoist up in the attic of my garage. Why? I’m glad you asked. Now that I have a jeep, I am going to want to take the top off sometimes. And I think the easiest way to do that is to have a hoist hidden up in the attic that can lower 4 cables down from the ceiling. I can then attach two straps through the jeep top to the cables and then raise the top up out of the way.
My fear is jeopardizing the structural integrity of my roof. The jeep hardtop is around 120 pounds. I figure if I spread the weight between 3 of the trusses just under their apex joints then it should be fine. I spent last night designing the setup on my iPad and making a shopping list. Today I went to the lumberyard and got some 2×4’s and a 2×6. Then I got some pipe and fittings at the hardware store, came home, and set to work building the hoist mount.
I got the mount assembled and installed in the attic. I was unable to find the type of pulleys I wanted at the hardware store so I ordered those online. I also ordered some 16/4 JST cord so I can extend the hoist’s controller, which currently is only 5 feet long. Tomorrow I am going to install a power outlet near the mount to power the hoist.
