Not too much to report this week. Work has been busy, not much time for projects. Valarie (the model for the last two paintings) has been working on her drawing skills and I attempted to share some of my knowledge. I’ve come to realize that it is a tough subject for me to teach. Anyway, we used my skeleton model for some reference. It was nice to put him to use. I must resume work on him again soon.
Last night I did a quick master copy of a Bouguereau painting. I’ve always admired his rendering of skin tones. They say he had 822 published paintings, sometimes producing up to 20 a year. I used my iPad to create the copy. I chose some colors that I thought looked close and just began painting. I wasn’t concerned about the drawing looking precise – I only wanted to play with the colors. I wanted to try and see how Bouguereau painted such awesome skin tones. I think I struggle a bit with the subtle transitions, but overall I felt pretty good about my copy. I plan to study a few of his other paintings soon.
